Sedation General Anesthesia Dentistry Frisco, Texas

When due to extending of treatment (major), age, severe dental phobia, special health care needs of patients, Nitrous oxide or sedation are not enough, we team up with board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists to care for your child. Our Pediatric Anesthesiologist will be monitoring the patient while Dr.Shir, our Pediatric Dentist will perform the necessary dental treatment. The patient will be sleep (unconscious) during the procedure for anywhere between 30 min-1.5 hours. When they awake all dental related procedures will be complete.

We take this appointment very seriously and make sure that our patient gets all the necessary medical consults and clearance before scheduling this appointment.

How do we put a child under general anesthesia?

To provide the safest and most comfortable way to treat young children with a lot of decay, we hire an Anesthesiologist to come to the office regularly. The general anesthesiologist will give the child some oral medication that helps make them drowsy. Afterward, the anesthesiologist will start an IV and give the right dosage of drugs to completely put the child to sleep. Once the child is completely sleeping, the anesthesiologist monitors the child’s breathing and vital signs, while the pediatric dentist provides all necessary treatment.
What are the advantages of general anesthesia?
The child will not be traumatized The greatest advantage of putting a child to sleep while getting their dental work done is that they will not be traumatized by the extent of their dental work.
Medication helps the child Some of the medications that are used actually help the child forget all about what happened during the treatment.
All treatment will be done Also, once the child is completely asleep, all treatment, including X-rays, fillings, crowns, and cleanings can be done at once in a manner that is not traumatic or scary for the child.

Common Questions for Parents

How often does my child need to see the pediatric dentist?
A check-up every six months is recommended in order prevent cavities and other dental problems. However, your pediatric dentist can tell you when and how often your child should visit based on their personal oral health.
Are baby teeth really that important to my child?
Primary, or “baby,” teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to erupt.
When should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up?
In order to prevent dental problems, your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday.
Why is it important to see a pediatric dentist instead of a general dentist?
Every dentist undergoes the same initial educational process, but those looking to become specialists in certain fields (such as orthodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, or, of course, pediatric care) must then enter into additional years of advanced training so that they’re fully prepared to provide their patients with the best care possible. Here in Frisco, parents can rest assured that our doctors know how to handle the unique challenges that come with treating children and ensure healthy, happy results that last for years to come – in fact, all four are certified by the Texas State Board and are Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Better yet, because our office is geared towards young patients, our fun atmosphere and amenities will be sure to make your child smile!

What Our Kids Parents Think About Us!

Dr. Shir was great…

Dr. Shir was great in taking care of my little one's tongue and lip tie. The staff here are very friendly and helpful. They definitely are thorough in explanations of the procedure that was going to be done and I would highly recommend them.

My two little ones love going to Sheer Smiles!

My two little ones love going to Sheer Smiles! The office is always nice and clean. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. There is never a long wait to be seen, so anxious and impatient little ones aren’t kept waiting. There are even TVs on the ceilings in the patient area with entertainment to distract them while being seen.

What diet and nutritional advice can be offered for building strong teeth?

Experts agree that children need food from all the major food groups to grow properly and stay healthy. Too many carbohydrates, sugars (for example, from cake, cookies, candies, milk, fruit juice, and other sugary foods and beverages), and savory foods and starches (for example, pretzels and potato chips) can cause tooth decay. How long carbohydrates remain on the teeth is the main culprit that leads to tooth decay. Read more

The effects of fruit on kids teeth

We all know that fruit is full of vitamins and an important part of kids diets. But did you know that too much fruit (whether it’s fresh fruit, fruit juices, dried fruit or canned fruit) can have a negative effect and contribute to problems such as cavities and erosion, especially if your kids are grazing on fruit all day? Are sports drinks okay for kids?

Statistics continue to show an alarming increase in the consumption of sports and energy drinks, especially among kids. Along with having the potential to cause various health problems, these beverages can cause irreversible damage to teeth. And sugar is only part of the reason — high acidity levels in these drinks erode enamel, the outer layer of teeth. Read more
